The cuts performed with a high-frequency instrument are comparable to those of a conventional scalpel in terms of their smoothness. The cut is performed by the rapid heating of extracellular and intracellular fluids, which evaporate in a miniature explosion and destroy cells and cell bonds.

The coagulation of extracellular and intracellular proteins occurs if the tissue is heated to over 50°C and the damaged blood vessel contracts until it closes completely. The loss of liquid makes the cells contract and fuses the cell membranes, which initiates haemostasis. In a bipolar instrument, the high-frequency current only flows between the two neighbouring electrodes on the respective surgical instrument and not through the patient’s body. The advantage is that there is no uncontrolled current flowing through the patient’s body with the risk of burns. This translates to maximum safety for the patient and user.
